When Should You Increase Your GLP-1 Dose?
This is one of the most common GLP-1 questions.
People want results fast.
The safest answer is also the most effective.
Increase based on tolerance and trends, not fear or urgency.
First rule
Follow your prescriber’s plan and your medication instructions.
Do not jump doses early because you feel impatient.
Two reasons to hold the dose longer
- Side effects are still active or disruptive.
- You are not yet consistent with food and fluids.
If you increase while side effects are active, the next week often feels worse.
Two reasons a dose increase may make sense
- You tolerate the current dose well.
- Hunger and cravings are returning and your trend is stalling.
Even then, the best next step might be diet and routine first.
Many plateaus are not a medication failure.
Use a simple decision filter
- If you feel sick most days, hold the dose.
- If you feel stable and appetite control is fading, discuss a dose increase.
- If you are losing slowly, do not rush. Slow loss can be a win.
If you have diabetes
Weight loss and glucose control do not follow the same timeline for everyone.
Many people need glucose to become more stable before weight changes feel obvious.
If you use insulin or meds that can cause lows, dose changes may require coordination.
Do not guess. Track your numbers and talk with your clinician.
What I tell patients
Do the shot.
Expect nothing early.
Let the pattern build.
Then adjust based on what your body shows you over weeks.
