GLP-1s Are Bigger Than Weight Loss: Heart, Kidneys, Cravings
People think GLP-1 medications only change appetite.
Weight loss matters.
It is not the only story.
One rule before we start
Some benefits are proven in specific groups.
Other benefits look promising but need more trials.
Talk with your clinician about your risk profile.
Heart protection in high-risk patients
In adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, semaglutide reduced major cardiovascular events in a large outcomes trial.
This matters most if you already carry heart risk.
Kidney benefits in diabetes with chronic kidney disease
In adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, semaglutide reduced major kidney outcomes and cardiovascular death.
Outside that group, research continues.
Cravings and alcohol use disorder
Early randomized trial data shows semaglutide reduced craving and some drinking outcomes in adults with alcohol use disorder.
This is not an approved indication.
It is a real signal.
Larger trials will decide how far it goes.
Brain health and Alzheimer’s
Researchers tested semaglutide in large Alzheimer’s trials.
Those trials did not show clear benefit on cognitive decline.
Some observational studies show lower dementia risk in people with diabetes who use GLP-1 medications.
Observational data does not prove cause.
It supports more research.
What this means for you
- If the medication works and you tolerate it, you gain more than weight loss.
- Your personal benefit depends on your diagnoses and risk.
- Stay focused on trends over time.
How MDHJ helps
MDHJ helps you track the signals that matter.
- Weight trend
- Blood pressure trend
- Blood sugar trend
- Symptoms by date
That data supports better visits and better decisions.
