Constipation on GLP-1s: What Helps

Constipation on GLP-1s: What Helps

Constipation is common on GLP-1 medications.

It does not mean the medication is “hurting you.”

It usually means your gut is moving slower and your intake has changed.

Start with the basics

  • Drink fluids throughout the day.
  • Eat fiber from real food.
  • Walk daily if you can.

Food fixes that work

  • Non-starchy vegetables most days.
  • Fiber-forward choices you tolerate well.
  • Protein with meals so you do not “snack-fiber” all day.

If you have diabetes

Do not try to fix constipation by eating fruit all day.

Choose lower-sugar, higher-fiber options and pair carbs with protein.

Keep your glucose plan first.

Stool softener or gentle laxative

Some people need a daily stool softener for a period of time.

Others do better with a short course of a gentle option.

If you are unsure, ask your clinician what fits your history and other meds.

Track patterns, not panic

Most side effects improve when your dose stays the same and your routine stabilizes.

GI side effects are common with GLP-1s and often become easier to manage with time and simple habits.

Red flags

  • Severe belly pain
  • Vomiting with inability to keep fluids down
  • No bowel movement with worsening pain and bloating
  • Blood in stool

If you have these, contact your clinician urgently.

How MDHJ helps

Track bowel patterns next to dose day, meals, and symptoms.

You stop guessing.

You can show your clinician what changed and when.

This post is for education. Discuss symptom management and medication changes with your prescribing clinician.
